Gunnvor Gingerbread Cookies

Gunnvor Gingerbread Cookies is now live in the Pattern store! A fun pattern to make which knits up in no time. Most of my own samples were knit up in less than a few hours. Pattern is available in Norwegian and in English.

The pattern is beginner friendly, and is written out row by row. The Gingerbread Cookies are worked in garter stitch and shaped by simple increases and decreases. Five different shapes are available: Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread Woman, Christmas Tree, Heart and House (with options for varying the house shape). The “cookies” are worked flat and gently felted by hand when finished. The pattern will guide you on different methods you can use to felt your cookies.

Gunnvor Gingerbread Cookies - Gingerbread Man

The cookies are worked in Rauma Garn Finull, which is a 100% Norwegian Wool yarn. The yarn is 2-ply “kardegarn” (carded yarn), which makes it very lofty and airy. When washed, it softens up, which is not so important for a Christmas ornament, but nice to know. It is non-superwash and is excellent for felting, which is why I chose this yarn for my pattern. If you cannot access this yarn in your area, try to look for a heavy fingering or light sport weight yarn. Preferavly in non-superwash wool. The yarn should also not be too tighly spun, else it will not felt as nicely. You could check out e.g. Yarnsub to look for an option.

Gunnvor Gingerbread Cookies is perfect for scrap yarn - you only need 2-3 g per cookie. From 1 ball of Rauma Finull you could have enough to make a small garland. Make your Gunnvor Gingerbread Cookies to use as Christmas ornaments, to decorate a Christmas present, for table setting at a festive table or make a whole garland. I am so excited to see your versions of my pattern!

When the cookies are finished, you can leave them as they are, or decorate with embroidered icing and glass beads. I embroidered my cookies with scrap yarn. The glass beads are bought from Søstrene Grene.

Gingerbread Man, Christmas Tree and Heart

I am so happy to be able to publish a pattern in both Norwegian and English at the same time. I have only recently started having interest for my patterns in English, and mostly I translate patterns by request. It was very fun to be asked to translate the Gunnvor Gingerbread pattern while the Norwegian test knitting was still ongoing. I can only say a warm thank you to all the test knitters who worked through both the Norwegian and English version of my pattern.

The Gunnvor Series is named after my maternal Grandmother. She was the Grandma with capital G. Everything she cooked tasted like heaven, she sang the most comforting goodnight songs and was always kind and smiling. She was also an avid knitter, although she mainly knit for practical reasons. This series of knitting patterns is my homage to her.

Happy Knitting!
